Lives in longleaf pine flatwoods of the Florida panhandle, Georgia and South Carolina. It breeds in seasonal ponds that dry out, which keeps fish away. Fire suppression and ditching have erased most of its ponds. The reticulated flatwoods salamander, split off in 2009, is federally endangered.

Observe: Look for the frosted gray lichen-like pattern.
